Masks by Cheryl (V Boutique employee)
When the shop closed, due to the outbreak of Covid-19 right after the March 8th Woman’s Mentoring walk, I began a gardening project, tried to re-organize my kitchen, and experimented with baking and cooking; but once I started organizing my closets, I found that I had quite a variety of perfectly lovely blouses, dresses, and scarves that I didn’t wear any more. So, instead of storing them away, I decided to make masks to help with the mask shortage. Not too long into our Shelter-In-Place, I noticed that I was getting lonely and missed the interactions that I so enjoyed at V Boutique. So I began making “fashion masks” to give away to friends and co-workers from the shop. Victoria loved the idea of offering a variety of handmade masks with one of V Boutique’s signature brooches as a way to continue the non-profit mission of “fashion, compassion and community”. This sewing project is keeping me connected in positive ways during such an isolating time. My masks are imperfectly one-of-kind (Victoria says “artistic”) and made with lots of love and beautiful fabrics. The front of the masks are made with either 100% cotton or silk and the liner is 100% cotton. I am teaching our interns how to sew and am so grateful for this community.

I tried to order masks on-line in March and I still haven’t received the delivery. I am in the process of trying to get a refund on my order! I had family members, including my niece Marissa, who works at V Boutique, who needed masks. My first attempt at making masks was with a scarf and rubber bands without sewing, but it easily unraveled. One day, I realized that I had a lot of beautiful sarongs, T-shirts and pants with elastic that I wasn’t wearing. So in desperation, I began looking on-line / You Tube for a pattern and got to work cutting up fabric and elastic! Many of my family members now wear my masks and this makes me happy. My masks aren’t sewn perfectly but they are one-of-a-kind. The masks are made from sarongs that are a cotton blend, the liner is made from cotton T-shirt fabric, and each mask has a pocket for a disposable filter.
